 Traveling light has a number of advantages. First, if you travel light you are able to take all you luggage as carry. When your luggage is you won''t lose your luggage, you bag doesn''t get thrown, dropped or otherwise abused, and if you have a tight connection you know you bag with be with you wherever you are. Having less luggage means you spend less time fighting with your luggage, have less to keep track of, and less to worry about losing. Imagine trying to hold onto a number of huge bags on the back of a motorcycle.] An old saying among experienced travelers: It''s better to bring half of what you think you need, and twice as much money. a number of other companies make decent travel packs. Note: I would stay away from wheeled bags. They cost a lot, add extra weight, and hold less than similarly size travel packs. You will also want a daypack or fanny pack to carry daily necessities like water, maps, camera, etc. Some travel packs such as the have a zip-off daypacks, though keep in mind that if you have this daypack filled, your bag no longer qualified as a carry-on bag. The other issue with zip off daypacks is that it might not be the correct size for your needs. It is always useful to have a small, "parachute cloth" duffel or tote. These cost around $9, weight just a few ounces, and take almost no space. You can keep your dirty laundry in it, use it for shopping, or as a carry-on for your return flight (you need something to hold all the things you picked up on the trip) The daypack is really a bit too bulky to be ideal for this purpose, but it''s a great solution for the traveler who bought a Continental Journey, has developed improved travel skills, and is looking to downsize! An excellent item that has become readily available of late is the "organizer pouch", a flat, rectangular, often multi-compartmented, nylon bag with zipper closure(s). They sometimes incorporate see-through mesh panels, and are available in a variety of colours. These are terrific for avoiding what could otherwise be a cluttered mess in your bag. Use a little thought to organize your belongings into categories, and store them in the pouches; this approach also makes smaller items less likely to be lost or forgotten. Outdoor Research makes particularly good pouches. If you''re packing a pair of shoes (in addition to those you''re wearing), consider the use of shoe bags: lightweight, inexpensive, drawstring bags designed to keep any residue of Parisian streets away from the rest of your belongings. Prepare for this eventuality when packing, by ensuring that those items that you absolutely must not lose (or might be damaged in a checked bag) remain with you when your bag cannot. Your daypack will come in handy here; make sure that it is readily accessible, and contains these critical items. Of course the really critical items should be in your security pouch anyway.
